A 46-year-old Nigerian man, Osemwengie Irorere, was tragically shot dead at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto, Canada, on Sunday, January 4, 2026, sparking shock and concern in both the local and Nigerian communities. The terminal, located near Yorkdale Road and Allen Road, is a major hub for commuters in the city.
According to a statement released by Toronto Police on Wednesday, January 7, officers responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 7 p.m. Preliminary investigations suggest that Irorere and the suspect, identified as Tyrel Gibson, both boarded a GO bus at the terminal. It is alleged that Gibson shot Irorere while on the bus before fleeing the scene on foot.
Officers quickly mobilized and located Gibson inside Yorkdale Mall, recovering a firearm in the process. Gibson, a 40-year-old Toronto resident with a long history of legal issues, has been formally charged with first-degree murder.
Police said life-saving measures were immediately administered to the victim at the scene, but unfortunately, Irorere was pronounced dead shortly after. The circumstances of the shooting are under thorough investigation, and police continue to appeal to witnesses who may have seen the incident or have additional information.
The tragic killing has sent ripples of grief through Toronto’s Nigerian community, with many expressing sorrow and calling for justice for Irorere. Authorities are also examining potential motives and any connections to previous incidents involving the suspect.
Public safety in major transit areas has again come under scrutiny, with residents and commuters expressing concern about gun violence and security at transportation hubs. Analysts say the incident underscores the importance of strengthened policing, surveillance, and preventive measures in public spaces, particularly in high-traffic areas like the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal.
Toronto Police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that all necessary steps will be taken to bring justice for Irorere while ensuring community safety.
