PETER OBI RAISES ALARM OVER UNLAWFUL DEMOLITION OF BROTHER’S PROPERTY IN LAGOS
The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned what he described as the unlawful demolition of his younger brother’s property in Ikeja, Lagos, calling the incident a clear reflection of lawlessness and impunity in the country.
Obi made the revelation on Tuesday via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, recounting how his brother called him frantically from Lagos after being denied access to a property he legally owns. The building was already being torn down by unknown individuals, allegedly without a court-ordered demolition permit.
“This morning, my youngest brother called me frantically, informing me that a group of people had invaded his company property in Ikeja, Lagos, and were demolishing the building,” Obi wrote.
The former Anambra governor, who was in Abuja at the time, said he immediately flew to Lagos and visited the site, only to be blocked by security men who claimed they were acting on a court judgment. However, upon inspection, the supposed judgment was vague and referenced “unknown persons and squatters.” No demolition order or proper documentation was presented.
“How do you sue an unknown person? How does a court issue a judgment in such a farce of a case?” Obi queried, stating that the demolition proceeded with no official accountability or traceable orders.
He further narrated how excavator operators and contractors present on-site refused to disclose who sent them, saying they had merely been “informed” to carry out the task. Obi waited from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., hoping to speak with whoever authorized the demolition yet no one responded or showed up.
Obi decried the situation as symptomatic of a deeper rot in Nigeria’s justice system and governance. He recalled a recent conversation with a businessman who cited lawlessness as the reason investors avoid Nigeria despite having a market presence.
“Until we have laws that protect people, nobody will invest in Nigeria,” the businessman reportedly told him.
The former governor expressed frustration over the worsening state of civil liberties and property rights, highlighting how even his own human rights have been violated simply for contesting a presidential election.
“If this level of lawlessness can happen to someone with a registered company and legitimate means, what hope does the ordinary Nigerian have?” he asked.
Obi reaffirmed his commitment to building a Nigeria where the rule of law prevails, saying: “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
