GOVERNOR SANWO-OLU APOLOGIZES FOR GRIDLOCK FOLLOWING INDEPENDENCE BRIDGE CLOSURE 

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has apologized to Lagosians for the severe traffic congestion caused by the closure of Independence Bridge.

He explained that the decision to repair the bridge had been in place for three years, emphasizing that the move was necessary to avert a potential disaster. The governor assured residents that efforts are underway to ease the traffic situation.

Thousands of commuters were stranded in heavy traffic between Wednesday evening and early Thursday following the closure of Independence Bridge for repairs. Viral videos and photos flooded social media, sparking backlash over the gridlock.

In response to the outcry, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, ordered the immediate reopening of the bridge to ease congestion.

During an inspection of the repair work on Thursday, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu apologised for the situation. He acknowledged the hardships commuters faced but stressed that the renovation was crucial to preventing an imminent disaster.

“First, I sincerely apologise to all Lagosians for the severe inconvenience experienced over the past 24 hours,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “More should have been done to communicate this development to residents.”

While recognising the difficulties caused by the closure, the governor reassured the public that the repairs were for the greater good, ensuring the safety of all road users in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
