TUNDE ONAKOYA VOWS TO SPONSOR YOUNG GIRL’S EDUCATION AFTER VIRAL PUBLIC HUMILIATION OF MOTHER
Chess Master Tunde Onakoya has vowed to fully sponsor the education of a young girl whose story went viral after a heartbreaking video showed her mother being publicly humiliated while engaging in child labor. Deeply moved by the incident, Onakoya shared how their struggles reminded him of his own difficult childhood before achieving success.
In a heartfelt post on his X page, Onakoya recalled how his mother worked as a housekeeper in 2016, sweeping homes and gutters to make ends meet. He described the emotional pain of being unable to support her financially at the time, often accompanying her on tasks like fetching water to complete the work before daylight, hoping to avoid the shame of their poverty.
Condemning the cruelty of the viral video, Onakoya emphasized that the mother and child deserved compassion, not public humiliation. He stressed that instead of outrage, society should extend a helping hand to those in need.

As a powerful act of kindness, Onakoya committed to funding the young girl’s education through university, hoping to ease their burden and give her a chance at a better future.
He wrote:
“It is extremely cruel to humiliate a mother in front of her daughter like this, even worse that it was recorded and shared online. My mother once swept gutters and homes in 2016, and it hurt that I couldn’t help her. I often joined her to fetch water so we could finish before daylight, avoiding the shame of being seen. Poverty forces many to hide their struggles in the dark.
Yes, that child should not be working, but beyond outrage, she and her mother need compassion. The humane response is to help. If no one has done so already, I will take full responsibility for her education through university. I hope this eases their burden in some way. These are incredibly hard times.
Our privilege blinds us in ways we’ll never truly understand.”
