Cape Town authorities have arrested Anabela Rungo, the mother of Miss Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, over alleged illegal residence in South Africa. The arrest, which took place on the morning of Saturday, February 15, 2025, was carried out by the South African Police Service (SAPS) with assistance from the Department of Home Affairs.

According to a statement from the Department of Home Affairs, Rungo’s South African documentation was revoked in September 2024 after it was discovered to have been fraudulently obtained. Despite being declared “undesirable” in the country, she allegedly continued to reside in South Africa using her Mozambican passport.

“In an apparent act of brazen disregard for the legal consequences of her conduct, it appears that Ms. Rungo has defied her ‘undesirable’ status through her Mozambican passport,” the department stated. Officials also confirmed that investigations are ongoing into possible further misrepresentation and fraudulent activities.

Authorities also discovered that Adetshina’s young child was living with Rungo at her residence in Cape Town. The Department of Social Development and the SAPS Child Protection Unit have been brought in to ensure the child’s welfare.

“The department is liaising with social development and the SAPS Child Protection Unit to safeguard the interests of the minor child,” Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza said. “Rungo will be handed over to the SAPS for further legal processing, and she remains under investigation by the Hawks.”

The news has sparked mixed reactions online. Some social media users questioned why Rungo remained in South Africa despite legal challenges, while others expressed sympathy.

This arrest comes months after Chidimma Adetshina faced scrutiny in South Africa over her nationality. In July 2024, she was forced to withdraw from the Miss Universe South Africa pageant following public backlash questioning her citizenship.

Adetshina, who was born to a South African mother and a Nigerian father, later represented Nigeria at Miss Universe 2024, where she emerged as the first runner-up. In an interview with BBC News Pidgin, she expressed her heartbreak over being rejected in the country she had lived in for 23 years.
