SEYI TINUBU’S GOVERNORSHIP “AMBITION” SPARKS DEBATE
The political debate over the potential governorship ambition of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, has intensified following controversial remarks by Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a Facebook post, Igbokwe dismissed the notion of Seyi Tinubu running for Lagos State governor, calling it a distraction and stating, “Ruling Lagos is not a job for the boys.”
This comment has sparked widespread criticism, including a firm response from Comrade Isaac Balami, a former Deputy Campaign Manager for Obi/Datti during the 2023 elections and a prominent APC member.
Balami expressed disappointment with Igbokwe’s remarks, labeling them outdated and inconsistent with the ideals of modern democracy. “If Seyi Tinubu decides to contest in the next Lagos governorship election, I will mobilize my youth supporters to back him,” Balami asserted.
He argued for the need to transition from gerontocracy to youth-led leadership, emphasizing that younger leaders are better positioned to meet the needs of Lagos residents.
Citing historical and contemporary examples of successful young leaders like Yakubu Gowon, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, and Emmanuel Macron, Balami noted, “Seyi Tinubu, who will be 42 in 2027, has the potential to deliver transformative governance in Lagos.”
Balami also criticized Igbokwe for dismissing the capabilities of Nigerian youth, pointing out that Igbokwe himself benefited from early political opportunities in Lagos. He urged the APC chieftain to embrace youth inclusion rather than propagate age-based biases.
Highlighting Seyi Tinubu’s leadership in corporate roles and his philanthropic efforts through his foundation, Balami said, “He empowers young people and restores hope. The older generation has done its part; it is time for innovative youth to take charge.”
The discussion has reignited conversations about age, competence, and inclusivity in Lagos politics, with Balami’s statements and mobilization efforts fueling a growing movement for youth leadership in Nigeria’s economic hub.
